2019 - Fiendish for You

FIENDISH FOR YOU

2018-NOTES.png

01. Joke Ting - GOLDLINK
Sound of the summer. “We don't look for trouble, we just have fun”

02. I Need You to Be Sweet Like Sugar - IBIBIO SOUND MACHINE
Building on the opening arpeggio, this jam just gets better as it goes.

03. Doin’ Time - LANA DEL RAY
A song from my youth brought back in such a smooth, hazy way. Perfect modernization.

04. Wounds - LITTLE SIMZ
Not the first (or last) time that I’ll fall for the cockney accent. Little Simz is young and hungry. Watch out.

05. Seventeen - SHARON VAN ETTEN
I’ve really slept on SVE. The emotion in this song is evocative and undeniable.

06. Destiny - BURNA BOY
This one was a tough pick from what might have been my favorite record of the year. Check out African Giant!

07. My Cheating Heart - LOVE FAME TRAGEDY
Singer from The Wombats. I’m into the sound.

08. White Onions - FOALS
A band that makes me feel that Rock & Roll still has a place in the culture.

09. Anna Painting - FOUR TET
Kieran Hebden has been crafting the dance grooves for most of my adult life. Dude has an incredible sonic library and delightful texture.

10. Hungry Child - HOT CHIP
Title track. Like Four Tet, but more… commercial? Hot Chip have been dropping top tunes to move a hoove on a consistent basis since they started.

11. Till The World Blow Up - DAVE + SAM
The Sam from Sam O.B., but doing Deep House.

12. Yeah I Care - NICK MURPHY
Formerly known as Chet Faker, Nick has one of my voices on the scene today.

13. 8 Figures - MAXO KREAM
”You ain't really gettin' money 'til you make 8 figures” H U S T L E

14. Speedboat - DENZEL CURRY
American counterpart to Little Simz? I think so. The record is ZUU. It’s lit.

15. Cognitive Dissonance - B BOYS
Stumbled onto this trio in the neighborhood @ a Noisey gig at HQ, opening for Porches. Haven’t seen a live band like this in a while. They tore it up.

16. Sunflower - VAMPIRE WEEKEND
The album Father of the Bride is long and all over the place. Some really nice tunes on there. Who doesn’t love a good vocal scat track?

17. Not Enough - BENNY SINGS
One listen. I couldn’t stop.

18. Before - BIBIO
Sometimes I wish I could simply live in this vibe. Bibio does it again.

19. Ohio - JOHN BATISTE, LEON BRIDGES, GARY CLARK JR.
Neil Young’s lyric. 40+ years later. Still relevant.
